“excellent, well buildd and well thought product.” 2010-01-04

I bought this item and there are few to nothing that it can’t do. I upgraded the firmware and now everynthing I threw at it plays flawlessly. My main interest was Matroska MKV support, and eberything works great. I also needed DTS downmixing which this box has. I was scared by some reviews that claimed the image quality is a bit below the WD Live. I had both of them for a few days and I noticed that if the Box Office is set on the default image setting (something like HDMI select) in some instances it’s image might be different than that of the WD Live. However if I specifically select 720p/ 1080p based on what the file is encoded in, the images are absolutely the same. To be very sure of this comparisons, I projected the same stand still from a paused HD movie and phhotographed a portion of the images. I then loaded them in paint and compared them pixel by pixel. The diference, for the default setting of the Box Office, was very small, almost indiscernable, but I can definately say there was NO difference whatsoever between the HD Live and Box Office when the correct setting was selected for the Box Office. Other than that, after 2 weeks of heavy use I still did not encounter any bug in this little box…

It meets my expectation. This kind of products have both positive and negative sides as they are improving. So what you expect it to do is important.
It can play all video formats as it says. Improvement on format support and audio are in the next firmware.
Small and convenient. But fan has noise and can be exchanged.
Customer support is excellent. But firmware and fix release is still slow.
Wireless adaptor is free in promotion. But it may not work for everybody.
For most users, it should be good enough for the time being. Feature/price is great.

Having been an HTPC enthusiast for quite some time, I was looking for a device that would allow me to move towards a more centralized concept where I could have an HD-capable media playback device in every room of the house streaming media from a central file server. As this was advertised on one of the websites I trust for technical prowess, I figured I would give it a try. After all, it looks like a very promising device – especially reading some of the reviews here.
While I will admit that my home network isn’t like many, since I work in the IT industry, it is still relatively simple. Alas, I couldn’t even get the thing to find my network shares – even though I created a share open to everyone on my file server. The only systems it found were actually my two main desktops – which are both Windows 7. With twelve systems on my network, I was puzzled as to why it would only discover two…
In the end, I have come to the following conclusion: If you have a UPNP media streaming server or the like, things might work out of the box but if you’re looking for a device that can read from network shares without any additional software, look elsewhere. Sadly the claims in the current reviews and the body of this product’s page are either exaggerated or they got a vastly different product than I did.
The firmware is unfortunately unfinished and very unpolished; furthermore, the resolutions seemed to be slightly out of spec or the menus misaligned because while it did appear to ‘fit’ within 1080P, the menus were maximized out to the very edge of the screen, leaving a feeling that something was a little off. Before anyone comments on it being my projector, I’ll note that the competing product I replaced this one with worked without issue out of the box and had a much more professional look and feel; it also didn’t cost that much more.
The auto-play and preview window can be turned off but are on by default and introduce unwanted lag into the interface. If you’re just trying to get to a media file half-way down the list, having to wait a few seconds each time you click on a media file (for the preview to load) is rather irritating. The automatic repeat and next-file function is also on by default, much to my annoyance. Just because I have a bunch of media files in the same folder doesn’t meant I want to automatically watch all of them. I could see a use for this feature, watching series or a party where you want music or video playing in the background; yet having it on by default is just another tacky irritation.

I now own the Asus O!Play and the Patriot Box Office. They use the exact same Relatek chipset so there is virtually no difference in the picture quality.
The main reason I bought the Patriot was because it had the wireless feature which the O!Play does not and you can also add an internal hard drive.
I have tried to stream media wirelessly to the Box Office, but it is simply unwatchable due to all the flickering and pausing. It uses wireless g which is simply not adequate to stream movies. You can forget about streaming HD movies wirelessly because it is unable to adequately stream even regular resolution movies.
However, when wired up to a LAN cable it works great and is basically the same as the O!Play with the benefit of being able to add an internal drive. It is also the same price as the O!Play at $99 (after rebate) so it is definately worth ocnsideration. Just don’t buy it if you want to stream wirelessly.Patriot Box Office 1080P High Definition Media Player PCMPBO25 (Black)

“Great Box, Remote is a joke and NOT Compatible with Logitech Harmony Remotes” 2009-12-10
By f2k031 (Atlanta, GA)
This is a great product, plays almost all formats beautifully.
I wish it was supported by Logitech Harmony Remotes, other digital media players like the ones from Western Digital are supported, but not this one. I hope Patriot works with Logitech and gets the remote database updated.
Previously I used to play movies on PS3, but with this device I am getting the same picture quality at a much lower power consumption.
